New Book! New BlogPost! New Title Pic!

... and also, NEW YORK. Coz that's where I am. I got here on Friday, early morning and gave the Weather Gods their chance to rain down upon the city at the PRECISE MOMENT that I was approaching my friend's address in Manhattan. The reason I know for sure that it was not any random shower is that the rain, which had been threatening to fall since the time my flight landed at 5 a.m. Newark (YES! The very airport at which a Certain Bollywood SuperNovaStar suffered an encounter with the authorities!), began to pour out in buckets two hours later within yards of my destination ...

Okay. Aside from this, all is well and I will soon start blogging my events here. But till then, here's a link to the NEW BOOK, i.e., the one I was working on all through the early months of this year,
WHERE'S THAT CAT?

Enjoy.

Hi and thanx for the question cartoonresearch!! The answer is: rights to the Malayalam edition have been sold to the KSICL -- Kerala State Insititute of Children's Literature -- but it too, will be featured at the Tulika website in time! So not to worry. It was the first to get translated! The name in M'am is (this gave me a great kick!): "AA POOCHA EVDE-A?" Do you approve, I wonder? I don't know who did the translation. As u know, I don't speak/read M'am but I can understand the spoken, colloquial version.

Thanks. I just now rang up the KSICL bureaucracy. They don't know who translates it, but it is not ready. AA [THAT] POOCHA [CAT] EVITE [WHERE]it is ok, I feel. I will be in Kerala by Nov end and will order the first copy :)

gt -- sorry it's taken me one whole week to respond -- my busy social schedule you know! Haha -- and tx for the greeting. But alas, no West Coast adventures this time.

cartoonresearch, I am very amused that you actually called KSIL for updates on a mere picture book! I am sure that has not happened to them very often. Tulika tells me that the Malayalam edition will be out in November, as KSICL has bought the edition and will be able to guarantee a much higher volume of sale. As for the title, I believe there is a final "aa" at the end -- but I do not have a scan of the cover picture with the M'am script on it. We shall have to wait till Nov for you to tell me whether or not you approve of the translation!

thank you. i hope there is this poyi aspect; poyi means gone. where is that cat should be translated as aa poocha evite poyi? and i had a feeling that something was missing, couldn't exactly pinpoint it. the literal translation of where's that cat is aa poocha evite? but Malayalis ask we ask aa poocha evite poyi? 'where has the cat gone?'

I wish it has the poyi aspect.

No, from what I remember, the transliteration of the Malayalam script-title is: aa poocha evite-aa?

The reason "poyi" would not (I think) enter the frame is that no-one actually asks this question in the book -- perhaps because the little girl is sort of chasing after the cat. The "poyi" approach would be appropriate if the little girl or her mother were standing in the middle of the house and saying, "Now ... where has that (wretched!) cat gone?" In other words, the question is really aimed at the READER of the book, not one of the characters in the book.

ok, eviteya, would work well, I feel; thanks for contextualizing the title; interesting, there is this 'ya' sound both in eviteya [where in colloquial malayalam] and poyi.

thanks
